THE INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON FOOD SOVEREIGNTY AND SECURITY IN AFRICA: REALITIES AND PERSPECTIVES
WILL TAKE PLACE ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2024, FROM 3:00 PM TO 5:45 PM
UNDER THE PRESIDENCY OF THE TUNISIAN MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, MR. ABDELMONEM BELAATI
Presentation of the AGROBUSINESS MEDAFRICA EXPO 2024
Building on the success of the 1st edition of the AGROBUSINESS MEDAFRICA EXPO, the 2nd edition, AGROBUSINESS MEDAFRICA EXPO 2024, will take place from November 14 to 16, 2024, at the Medina, Yasmine Hammamet, within the framework of a Private/Public partnership.
AGROBUSINESS MEDAFRICA EXPO 2024 aims to be a physical and virtual platform for meetings between Tunisian and foreign economic operators in the agri-food sector to develop a win-win partnership in the logic of Tunisian, African, and international food self-sufficiency.
The Mediterranean and African dimensions are strategic for Tunisia. The AGROBUSINESS MEDAFRICA EXPO 2024 will attempt to highlight them by inviting foreign economic operators to establish strong networks and connections with these regions.
As such, the Expo will be an excellent opportunity to present the Tunisian agri-food offer to potential foreign investors and buyers and to organize B2B meetings with Tunisian industrialists.
The International Forums, an integral part of the AGROBUSINESS MEDAFRICA EXPO 2024:
The presence of a significant number of Tunisian and foreign operators in the agri-food sector in Hammamet for three days during this Expo will be an excellent opportunity to organize international forums discussing current issues in the sector, both in terms of the crisis in agri-food production in an unstable international environment mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and in terms of food self-sufficiency and security, as well as development and partnership prospects in this sector.
THE INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON FOOD SOVEREIGNTY AND SECURITY IN AFRICA: REALITIES AND PERSPECTIVES has already addressed the issues of food self-sufficiency and security in Africa during its first edition last year. This year, it will discuss the topic of food sovereignty in African countries and their ambition to accelerate the growth and transformation of agriculture in Africa for shared prosperity and better living conditions.
Projections from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations indicate that by 2050, Africa's population will likely double, reaching 2.2 billion inhabitants, and thus the increase in demand for food products will be the highest among all regions of the world. How will the rural world, predominantly made up of small farms and still concentrating more than 60% of the active population, manage to meet this demand and thus contribute to the continent's food sovereignty? The Malabo Declaration, adopted in 2014 by the members of the African Union, proposed an answer. Its ambition is in its title: Accelerating the growth and transformation of agriculture in Africa for shared prosperity and better living conditions. African states made a series of commitments for 2025: eradicating hunger, halving poverty, tripling intra-African trade in agricultural products and services, and strengthening the resilience of livelihoods and production systems to climate change and biodiversity loss.

THE FORUM ON FINANCING MECHANISMS FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP IN THE AGRO-FOOD SECTOR will focus on national and international financing facilities to boost investment and partnership for rapid and effective development of the agri-food sector, one of the major keys to global food self-sufficiency and security.
The agri-food industry is now at the center ofa very important economic complex that we call the food system, whose goal is to feed populations mainly through a system of market relations. The position occupied by the agri-food industry in the food system varies by country.
However, there is a convergence towards a global agri-industrial services sector, a model in which the agri-food industry plays a central role. It should also be considered that the agri-food industry is influenced by trends of globalization and inherent financialization, aimed at promoting the agro-food industry on a planetary scale in the long term.

THE INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON NEW EXPORT MARKETS FOR THE AGRO-FOOD SECTOR will be a good opportunity to discuss production and export issues in the agri-food sector and to enlighten Tunisian and foreign industrialists and investors on the opportunities for implementing agri-food projects in a logic of optimization related to satisfying local and export markets.
Feeding the world is, unsurprisingly, a key element of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, whose Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include a major pillar on eradicating hunger and poverty everywhere in the world. Exporting can play an important role in this effort.
Tunisia conducts more than 70% of its foreign trade with the European Union. The International Forum on New Export Markets for the Agro-Food Sector will raise the issue of diversifying these exports to non-traditional markets for Tunisia.
This year, the focus will be on the markets of Canada, Germany, and Asia.
International experts will shed light on the export opportunities for agri-food products in these new markets, especially Canada, Germany, and Asia, with a particular focus on China, the world's largest consumer of agri-food products.
